Eastward Ho! Country Club
Chatham,
Massachusetts
Designed in 1922 by Englishman Herbert Fowler, the course
was formerly known as Chatham Country Club. My work
consisted of restoring all bunkers to Fowler's style
(e.g. Walton Heath, Westward Ho! and Saunton in the
U.K.). I also reintroduced eleven original Fowler bunkers
that had been removed through the years.
The green surfaces were also restored to their original
green pads while altering several of the more sloping surfaces at holes 4, 7, 8 and 11. Additionally, paths were removed while substantial tree removal and a 20-acre turf grass conversion back to native occurred.
After completion of the renovation program, Eastward Ho! is now ranked in Golfweek's Top 100 Classic Courses in the country.
"The members of Eastward Ho! are a very frugal group of New England Yankees, who part with a dollar with great care. Several of them had concerns about the cost of the renovation project and the need to improve a course that was already beautiful. After enjoying the results of your work this summer, they consistently have praise for the result and feel that this is the best money our club has spent since acquiring the land in 1920. You were true to your word that you have 'polished our gem' and turned a beautiful golf course into a truly magnificent one." — Douglas P. Hamilton, Vice President and Committee Chair, Eastward Ho!
